Sport Casual Returns

Last week Sport Casual returned to the show for another guest set. It was great to have him back to share an eclectic mix of island soul, disco medleys, gospel and mid-eighties boogie. We traded off a few records for the second half of the night. He has a new night shaping up in Williamsburg, so keep an eye on Future Funk for updates along with a slew of fantastic mixes.

A (Very) Downtown Affair Christmas with MX Greens

As we wind down 2011, we’re real excited to kick off December with a seasonal mix to welcome the holiday cheer. A full on Christmas mix for a specialty, all vinyl program is a tall order, and we surely couldn’t put something like this together on our own. Fortunately, at the suggestion of a few friends of the program we dialed up Ridgewood, QNS DJ MX Greens. We were told he’s THE Christmas DJ. Prior to this set I wasn’t really sure what that credential meant, as I hadn’t imagined the variety of tunes, stories and concept records that were put out in the larger ‘funk / soul’ continuum. Within his record collection, there’s an ever-expanding section of HOLIDAY FUNK LPs/45″s – partially built up by solo digs, but also as a result of any funky holiday records gravitating his way as friends pass along a record here or there, knowing that it’s getting cataloged in a deep repository of Christmas’ (funky) past. Below is the full 2.5 hr set, up nice and early for heightened, high quality Christmas cheer.

MX Greens will be starting up a new biweekly party with an esteemed roster of DJs, collectively billed as the Ridgewood Soul-cial Club starting on Monday the 12th at Tandem.

Names You Can Trust

We’ve been overdue for another Monk One set since having him on the show back in 2010. Last week he came back with his label mates from Names You Can Trust, Oneman and E’s E. Oneman started the night off with a nice synth heavy set of new and old tracks and was followed by E’s E with another eclectic bunch of selections that dipped into classic boogie territory. Monk closed things out with an all 45 set of classic disco and left us with a couple boogie tracks to cool off with. If you like what you heard, especially the Midnight Lab Band cut, be sure to check out their website for releases, mixes and shows. They’re part of a crew holding parties at Sycamore in Flatbush, BK, so there is always something to keep an eye out for. This weekend, Monk is playing in the Gowanus area in support of Dave Tompkins’ “How To Wreck A Nice Beach”. Details here.

Asaf Segal on A Downtown Affair

Asaf Segal joined us in the studio for a return visit to the program this Friday. We always get hyped when his date on the schedule nears; in past sets, he’s played a lot of head-turning records, nearly all of which were new to the program. This time around we were fortunate again to air an inspired set of music that undoubtedly included debut tracks on our program – and likely for the tri-state FM radio radius as well… Check the playlist, recording and discussion below for a better sense of the vibe, sounds, and breadth of the labels and eras covered in the 90 minutes. Tackleberry and yours truly complemented with a closing hour set. You can catch Asaf on the third Thursday of each month at Sycamore Bar in Brooklyn, where he’s found playing records alongside a few from the Names You Can Trust crew who happen to be with us this Friday.

Joel Stones on A Downtown Affair

Last Friday on A Downtown Affair we invited Joel Stones to the studio for a guest set. He is the owner of Tropicalia in Furs in Manhattan, which is the only place to find a consistent stock of Brazilian LPs and 7″s. Following the success of Joel’s first compilation, Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas, he is setting out to film a documentary about Brazil’s psychedelic past. In an effort to raise funds, Joel and the film’s director, Artur Ratton, have set up a Kickstarter page and are just short of reaching their goal. Check out his set below, and if you like what you hear, be sure to visit the Kickstarter project.

Last week Mike and I were back in the studio for a nice “residents only” set. We shook the dust off some classics that haven’t gotten much play from us lately and debuted the Rim and Kasa edit off Red Greg’s amazing Under The Influence Volume 1 compilation. There are a limited number of vinyl pressings floating around, so don’t sleep! The set starts off a bit melancholy with Trevor Herion’s best Labyrinth-era-Bowie and slowly picks up with Mike digging out album cuts from Orlando Johnson, Rene & Angela and Leroy Hutson. Enjoy!

We coaxed Love On The Run back to the air for the first in-studio he’s played for us in a while. Always one to set a proper vibe, he graced us with a mix of disco and soul that he’s calling Analog Bedroom. He’s got a few events coming up, so be sure to check out Secret Rendezvous, but we definitely want to plug this Saturday’s union of Sharegroove and Love On The Run at Tandem.

camp debonair meets play it loud!

We held a little Camp Debonair pre-party in the studio on A Downtown Affair a few weeks back. Doug Gomez & Son of Sound from Play It Loud! joined us along with our good friend Stegs from Vietcong Disco for a disco boogie set done carousel style – three selections before stepping off the decks and letting your partner on. The Play It Loud! deejays put on one of our favorite parties, so it was nice to find out that things vibed real well! What resulted was a nice preamble to the next night’s Camp festivities. Counselor Stegs still holds the master tapes for the wee hours wind down… Future release TBD.
