Asaf Segal on A Downtown Affair

Asaf Segal joined us in the studio for a return visit to the program this Friday. We always get hyped when his date on the schedule nears; in past sets, he’s played a lot of head-turning records, nearly all of which were new to the program. This time around we were fortunate again to air an inspired set of music that undoubtedly included debut tracks on our program – and likely for the tri-state FM radio radius as well… Check the playlist, recording and discussion below for a better sense of the vibe, sounds, and breadth of the labels and eras covered in the 90 minutes. Tackleberry and yours truly complemented with a closing hour set. You can catch Asaf on the third Thursday of each month at Sycamore Bar in Brooklyn, where he’s found playing records alongside a few from the Names You Can Trust crew who happen to be with us this Friday.

camp debonair meets play it loud!

We held a little Camp Debonair pre-party in the studio on A Downtown Affair a few weeks back. Doug Gomez & Son of Sound from Play It Loud! joined us along with our good friend Stegs from Vietcong Disco for a disco boogie set done carousel style – three selections before stepping off the decks and letting your partner on. The Play It Loud! deejays put on one of our favorite parties, so it was nice to find out that things vibed real well! What resulted was a nice preamble to the next night’s Camp festivities. Counselor Stegs still holds the master tapes for the wee hours wind down… Future release TBD.

MAMABEAR FROM SWEATER FUNK ON ADA

Last week we were joined by Mamabear from the Sweater Funk crew who have been doing their boogie-centric party on a weekly basis out in SF for a few years now. We chatted for a bit and got some context around the illustrious boogie-funk party, the jackets, the Chinatown vibe and more. Mamabear put together a pretty stunning set of boogie & soulful disco material, touching on some classics and a few lesser known cuts that threw us for a loop! Tackleberry and I closed up shop in complementary style. Big up to Monk One for linking this one up!

Waxist Selecta on ADA

We’ve been holding onto this one for too long! Up now is a mix we aired on A Downtown Affair in mid August from Waxist Selecta out of Paris. This one’s a super fun, soulful long player clocking in at 1:43! Really cool cuts on here, many of which are first-time material for us. Be sure to check out his Soundcloud page which is chock full of rare groove mixes and also includes a few tasteful edits too. Fingers crossed for a surprise special guest this Friday night as well!

the boogie man on a downtown affair

This past week we were joined by Pablo Salinas, aka the Boogie Man, who graced us with a seriously nice extended 45s set… It was all Boogie Man for this week, with a finely programmed mix of soulful sounds across the disco & soul spectrum. He touched on some classics that we’ve slept on while stringing together breaks on doubles and not missing a beat.

He’ll be playing alongside some folks who’ve also put down some really fantastic mixes on the radio program: Old Chris, The Honeydripper, and Sami Dariush. Their party Main Squeeze will be going on at Zebulon (235 Wythe Ave, Williamsburg BK) this Friday night at 10pm. Don’t sleep! Sure to be a music lover’s get down!!!

Slow jam special

We’ve been looking to have our good friend and sometime collaborator Bennett4$enate back on the radio program for a while now. And we caught Bennett at a good time; he’s on hiatus from his freeform radio show Awesome New Place across the river on WFMU. This time we each pulled out records inspired by the Quiet Storm radio format to lend A Downtown Affair’s hand at programming an emotionally charged, ballad-focused catalog of slow jams from our respective record collections. And we took free range in grooming our selections to showcase songs & artists that were really giving it 110%; mixed metaphors, elaborate pic sleeves, strong tunes and the like. What we ended up with were sounds across the continuum of QS material. Earnest soul ballads from mid-seventies vocal groups had as much relevance for us as rhythm tracked, syncopated, sax-backed R&B rockers from the fleet of young male major label artists at the beginning of the eighties. We also discovered that many of the more iconic producers and players that were prolific in their output during the 70′s and 80′s dipped into and out of a sound that was assimilated into the cannon of Quiet Storm. There are a handful of these musicians that appeared in various forms along the playlist, totally unintentionally on our part. Rest assured, all thematic content inspires Quiet Storm moments. The added flair of seaside sounds and monologues are just collateral pleasure. This one is in two parts of 4-5 record segments book-ended by color commentary left in there for good measure.

ADA – June 10th, 2011

This past week we packed up records that can be broadly filed under “summertime jams” to start off the first part of the show. The “summertime vibe” can be a fairly subjective thing, but in one way or another many of the tracks in the first part come to mind when the season starts to kick in. There are some really killer plays on here, like the Norman Week’s gospel odyssey Hold On, the outright slamming Sinnamon club classic I Need You Now and Benny Golson’s ensemble sound in I’m Always Dancing To The Music. Tonight we’ve got JBX returning to the program and if his prior appearances are any indication of what’s in store, we should expect a fantastic program ahead!

Johan Churchill (Tres Lingerie)

For our last show in April we were fortunate enough to have a last minute guest drop by to play a few selections. New York native Johan Churchill was back in town from San Francisco, where he produces and deejays as one half of Tres Lingerie and is a resident at Go Bang! Johan came through with a tote filled with wax picked up from an evening’s shopping in the area, and also had some digital plays to round out a boogie flavored set.
