Fineline – 4.24.10

Time for FineLine. I’ll be going the distance solo this month.

Picked up some good 45s on Record Store Day this past weekend, and will definitely be spinning some gems that I discovered when filling in for Small Change a few weeks ago.
Come through on Saturday and have a beer!

… and keep your ears tuned for this one:

upcoming radio shifts

Two upcoming Bennett4Senate radio shows on WFMU:

Wednesday, March 31 (aka late night Tues) 2-6am, filling in for Marty McSorley.
Wednesday, April 7 11pm – 2am, filling in for DJ $mall Change.

Tune in! And if you can’t catch it live, it’ll be archived here.

FineLine 3.20.10 …DJ Ghostdad repeat

Hey y’all, a little last minute heads up – FineLine in effect tomorrow night!

Last month was our most successful FineLine yet, so many thanks to all you that came out and thanks for drinking! There was a posse of 90s DJs in the main room that I didn’t know, but their people were feeling the disco vibe in front, getting their drink on hard until their preferred dude came on in back – real late. The room finally cleared around 2:45 and everyone went into the back for their final 45 minutes of heavy jungle, while Ghostdad and I played the guilty pleasure joints, juggled some doubles, and he gave me a quick tutorial on the built in effects on the mixer(ixer… ixer… ixer… ixer……).

Needless to say had a fun time, so I invited him back for one mo’ gin. He’s dragging another crate of classics down 93 from Boston as part of his protracted relocation.

Right in time for this spate of nice weather, I finally got my hands on a copy of Verticle Lines – Beach Boy, an awesome cruiser of a weirdo summer jam and the first ever release on Tuff City. Here’s a preview til I drop the needle on the genuine article at the Knit! – B4$

support WFMU!

Hey guys, a quick -break- in our normal programming on LGS to put in a plug for WFMU, the Jersey City-based radio station and bastion of freeform broadcasting. They are in the last 5 days of their annual fundraiser and need some support! AKA your money!

Unlike WNYU, which has the backing of a university, WFMU is completely listener supported, so you can imagine that in these tough economic times its a struggle to meet their operating costs through these fundraisers. I can’t say enough good things about the content that the (all-volunteer) DJs have been putting down for years, and I don’t have to either because WFMU has a MASSIVE archive of YEARS of their shows (which costs a pretty penny to maintain). All free online!

So listen for yourself. You’ve got DJ Small Change for the disco/soul heads, Billy Jam holding down the hip hop, a whole mess of WNYU veterans, the Director of the Raymond Scott Archives, and a former Tommy Boy exec all holding down shows! Trust me that’s just the tip of the iceberg, this station has put me up on so much music that would otherwise never make it on the radio, its unbelievable.

…. oh you know who else does shows sometimes on WFMU? ME! Thats right, after a few guest spots and a bunch of volunteering, I’m now doing fill-ins from time to time so keep an eye on my playlists!

So please, dig deep in your pockets, pledge pledge pledge, score yourself some awesome swag, and support the most bad ass independent media outlet out there!

FineLine 2.20.10 w/ DJ Ghostdad

Coming up next weekend is the latest edition of Fineline at The Knitting Factory.

Joining me this month is DJ Ghostdad – NJ native, Boston affiliate, choice selector. He’s between cities right now but promised to load up a crate of goods to bring back this way on his next return trip. Check him out on Fully Fitted for a taste of the diverse content he’s gonna provide. Call the party line (1-800-988-7361) for info on his new First Fridays at Coco 66 (with XXXchange), or hit the archives if you can’t wait for the weekend to get loose.

See you next Saturday.

FineLine – Sat. Jan 16th w/ Mike McGill

FineLine 1.16.09
Hey y’all – tomorrow night is the January edition of FineLine!

I’m pleased as punch to be joined by fellow LGS founder Mike McGill in The Kontrol Room. Should be a real smooth-type gathering – even the weather gods have granted us some karma after last month’s snowed-in fireside affair. Mike is “dusting off his r&b records” which is great to hear.

Its free as always! Come through and tell us about your big 2010 plans over a beer, while serenaded by tasteful tracks! Invite yourself on Facebook if you’re so inclined.

scratchin the itch

I bought an edit record from a thrift store in Miami this summer. The track was called “Genius at Work,” and across the pink label, the previous owner had used a ballpoint pen to scrawl “Mixed by a Columbian DJ.” From the wide open harmonica, and then inexplicable plinking dub section in the middle, I’ve played it to death since then, on just about every radio set or live show I’ve done. While doing some unrelated research on allmusic.com today, I got a hunch and tracked down the original. A cool track in its own right, here’s Area Code 615 doing “Stone Fox Chase” (1970). Enjoy!

bennett4senate – xmix09

I just posted my annual XMIX over on the F.A.T. blog. Its a year-end wrap up highlighting tracks that were favorites for me this year – not necessarily ’09 releases but all tunes that were powerful music for me.
Also includes a very special YouTube audio mix – 40 mins of weird YouTube audio, complete with links for sharing.

Here’s to big things in 2010!!!

12.19.09 – Fineline w/ Marty McSorley & Champagne King

For this month’s FineLine, I’ve invited two good friends, who just so happen to be fantastic selectors.

Marty McSorley – a L.A. transplant who has found a new home in Brooklyn, and a time slot on WFMU. I’ve shared the decks with Marty before and am always pleased with the breadth of his picks. He even invited me on his show one time for a special 4 hours of cassettes only. He’s doin it for the children.

Champangne King (aka Jon Kirby) and I also did a brief stint together on the internet-airwaves when I was on the last few months of The Wax Poetics Record Rundown on East Village Radio. Jon is a funk forte, Carolinas say HO!

We’ll be getting loose in the front room, so come through, have a beer, and enjoy the crispy sound quality. Seriously though, the sound in that room is great; after last month I can’t wait to be back.

See you next Saturday!

11.21.09 – FineLine with special guests Amir and Tackleberry

FineLine – A new monthly at The Kontrol Room @ Knitting Factory Brooklyn.

Resident DJ Bennett4$enate builds on a synth disco bedrock to display jams and gems of 808 electro, sweet stepping boogie, and drum machine r&b. With special guests each month, FineLine is a place for to DJs get loose with outsider sets, and for listeners to soak up the benefits.

Guaranteed to be a great place to have a beer and hear something new to you. The room is a bit lacking in the dance-floor department so I want to make this a night for DJs to go a little bit farther, bug it out, and play some weirdo tracks.

Luckily I’m joined by two DJs well prepared to do just that:
AMIR
…and if you don’t know, now you know. Amir (of Kon and Amir) brings the rarest of digs, always tasteful. Hopefully he’ll play some African joints off his upcoming BBE comp.

TACKLEBERRY
Let’s Get Serious’ own, half the menergy of A Downtown Affair. You know his disco, but he knows his Psych too, and has wiped the cat piss off enough local rap 12″ buried in the back of decrepit stores to have some mind-bending tunes.

Invite yourself on Facebook, come through, have a drink, and lets make this night a success so we can keep walking that FineLine!
