Citizen Kane

Citizen Kane on A Downtown Affair

Citizen Kane dropped by the studio for a guest set last Friday. He started off his set with a few new releases, including the opener from his own Disques Sinthomme label, before diving into a mix full of brilliant European obscurities alongside some unreleased edits. The entire set has been dedicate to his friend Dru Barnes who recently fell victim to an unprovoked attack in Brooklyn. If you would like to donate to help with Dru’s medical bills, please visit the following funding page.

Play It Loud & Stegs

Play It Loud! and Stegs on A Downtown Affair

Last Friday we were joined by two thirds of the former BK disco collective Play It Loud. Doug Gomez and Henry Maldonado put on the much loved monthly party alongside Darshan Jesrani before closing it down a few years ago. We got a chance to feature them on the air back then and later with our good friend Stegs as a preamble to a very special Camp Debonair. On Friday Stegs brought things full circle by joining us as well for one last go on the radio. Be sure to up with the latest from Henry and Doug at Son Of Sound and Drrtyhaze.

Nydia & Sami

A Downtown Affair with Nydia & Sami

Our episode from a couple Fridays ago was the second in a recent string of modern soul burners, this time from Nydia & Sami Davila. We’ve had Nydia on the show a bunch of times over the years and I’ll admit to poaching many of my favorite soul 45s from her first set back in 2010. She was actually the one to invite Sami a couple of years ago, so it was a real pleasure to have each of them back on the air together. Some really serious plays on this mix which will easily secure it as one to return to in our archives. Enjoy!

Jonny Paycheck & MX Greens

Together for the first time, prior guests Jonny Paycheck and MX Greens didn’t disappoint splitting up half the show last Friday evening. Jonny of Good Records was one of the first guests I invited to the program back in our early days and MX Greens brought us one of the best holiday sets we’ve ever had. Jonny started off the night packing a few under the radar cuts while circling the globe along the way. MX Greens opened his set with the dark machine funk of Deekay Jones and closed with the sort of steppers you’ll often hear at the Monday night parties he hosts at Tandem alongside Boogie Man. Jussi B & Chairman Mao

Jussi B and Chairman Mao on A Downtown Affair

On a rainy Friday in NYC we took a plunge into the deep end of modern soul with Finland’s Jussi B and returning guest Chairman Mao. Both came with a monster stack of 45s, though there was some disagreement amongst the group as to who won the night. That said, we got a ton of new plays for the show and the term “strobe up” found its way into the ADA lexicon via a cryptic note scrawled on a second hand sleeve. Big thanks to Jussi and Mao for lugging their records out in the weather and also to Nydia and Sami for linking us up!

Disco65 & Chino3

Disco65 and Chino3 on A Downtown Affair

Our third round with Disco65 and Chino3 saw each if them deviating slightly from their prior sets. Disco65 started off the night with a bit of heavy percussion from Krautrock mainstays Amon Duul II before settling back into territory that’s a bit more familiar to the program. Chino3 took over the second half and went off piece with Italo, electro and Kraftwerk medley to close. Always a pleasure to have each of them on the show. You can hit them up on Facebook to keep up with their events around town.
