Sound Club on A DOWNTOWN AFFAIR

We’ve been so busy setting up and breaking down the nativity scene(s), plastic reindeer and miniature Christmas villages in the studio that we are only now getting around to putting up Sound Club’s set from the 16th of December. Matt Brownell and Daniel GutiĆ©rrez collectively run as Sound Club, and after forging a partnership when hosting a radio program on Newtown Radio, they’ve since moved toward production work and gigging about town. We were fortunate to have them play for the full two and a half hours, with which they put together a really great set with a multitude of moods cultivated by the eclectic selections they picked out for the evening’s program. Look out for Sound Club at a Brooklyn venue near you!

Sport Casual Returns

Last week Sport Casual returned to the show for another guest set. It was great to have him back to share an eclectic mix of island soul, disco medleys, gospel and mid-eighties boogie. We traded off a few records for the second half of the night. He has a new night shaping up in Williamsburg, so keep an eye on Future Funk for updates along with a slew of fantastic mixes.

A (Very) Downtown Affair Christmas with MX Greens

As we wind down 2011, we’re real excited to kick off December with a seasonal mix to welcome the holiday cheer. A full on Christmas mix for a specialty, all vinyl program is a tall order, and we surely couldn’t put something like this together on our own. Fortunately, at the suggestion of a few friends of the program we dialed up Ridgewood, QNS DJ MX Greens. We were told he’s THE Christmas DJ. Prior to this set I wasn’t really sure what that credential meant, as I hadn’t imagined the variety of tunes, stories and concept records that were put out in the larger ‘funk / soul’ continuum. Within his record collection, there’s an ever-expanding section of HOLIDAY FUNK LPs/45″s – partially built up by solo digs, but also as a result of any funky holiday records gravitating his way as friends pass along a record here or there, knowing that it’s getting cataloged in a deep repository of Christmas’ (funky) past. Below is the full 2.5 hr set, up nice and early for heightened, high quality Christmas cheer.

MX Greens will be starting up a new biweekly party with an esteemed roster of DJs, collectively billed as the Ridgewood Soul-cial Club starting on Monday the 12th at Tandem.

Names You Can Trust

We’ve been overdue for another Monk One set since having him on the show back in 2010. Last week he came back with his label mates from Names You Can Trust, Oneman and E’s E. Oneman started the night off with a nice synth heavy set of new and old tracks and was followed by E’s E with another eclectic bunch of selections that dipped into classic boogie territory. Monk closed things out with an all 45 set of classic disco and left us with a couple boogie tracks to cool off with. If you like what you heard, especially the Midnight Lab Band cut, be sure to check out their website for releases, mixes and shows. They’re part of a crew holding parties at Sycamore in Flatbush, BK, so there is always something to keep an eye out for. This weekend, Monk is playing in the Gowanus area in support of Dave Tompkins’ “How To Wreck A Nice Beach”. Details here.
