Foreal People Back in The Studio

Temperatures peaked at the end of last week and Foreal People came to the studio to provide a bit of relief. Love On The Run’s mix of modern soul set the tone and Josh Dunn and Benguin took over for an hour and a half chock full of edits and uptempo disco. This Friday Boogie Man is doing a special all 45 set. Tune in!

A Downtown Affair – July 15th 2011

Mike and I had the radio to ourselves for the first time in a little while last Friday. It was a nice chance to break out some new tracks. Started off with the title cut from Numero Group’s LP of previously unreleased material from DC’s Father’s Children. After a few soul cuts the set turns a bit cosmic and elevates from there. Tune in this Friday when Foreal People return to the studio!

Slow jam special

We’ve been looking to have our good friend and sometime collaborator Bennett4$enate back on the radio program for a while now. And we caught Bennett at a good time; he’s on hiatus from his freeform radio show Awesome New Place across the river on WFMU. This time we each pulled out records inspired by the Quiet Storm radio format to lend A Downtown Affair’s hand at programming an emotionally charged, ballad-focused catalog of slow jams from our respective record collections. And we took free range in grooming our selections to showcase songs & artists that were really giving it 110%; mixed metaphors, elaborate pic sleeves, strong tunes and the like. What we ended up with were sounds across the continuum of QS material. Earnest soul ballads from mid-seventies vocal groups had as much relevance for us as rhythm tracked, syncopated, sax-backed R&B rockers from the fleet of young male major label artists at the beginning of the eighties. We also discovered that many of the more iconic producers and players that were prolific in their output during the 70′s and 80′s dipped into and out of a sound that was assimilated into the cannon of Quiet Storm. There are a handful of these musicians that appeared in various forms along the playlist, totally unintentionally on our part. Rest assured, all thematic content inspires Quiet Storm moments. The added flair of seaside sounds and monologues are just collateral pleasure. This one is in two parts of 4-5 record segments book-ended by color commentary left in there for good measure.

DJ Sami Dariush Guest Set

My apologies for the delay in getting this set posted, but I promise it’s well worth the wait. The Honeydripper hit us up last week with an impromptu guest idea. Her friend Sami Dariush was flying in from Finland with a nice bag of modern soul 45s and it just so happened that we had no one booked for Friday night. Glance at the track list and you’ll see that he brought some serious heat. He runs Lifesaver Records in Helsinki and hosts a local club night called Soul Sides. You can catch him at Main Squeeze with Honeydripper, Boogieman & Old Chris in August!

Mikie Lixxx & Joseph Colbourne

Last week Mikie Lixxx and Joseph Colbourne played on A Downtown Affair in support of the Bionic Boogie party at Tandem. Amazing tracks all around and I had a great time hanging in the studio that night. So much that we ended up spilling over into after hours. Mikie held down Bionic Boogie while living in NYC and came back to revive the party last Saturday, this time bringing Joseph in from Boston. Be sure to stay tuned to Audio Seduction and Joseph Colbourne for more music and parties.
