Sunday Gospel [02]

Slowing things down a bit for our second post in this series. Here are four soul tracks to close out your weekend. A falsetto driven opener from The Gospel Stylistics, the wailing lead vocals of James Sanders with Raleigh NC’s Gospel Legends, the moody title cut from The Church of Jesus Young Adult Choir LP and a closer written, arranged and sung by Georgia’s June Bonner.

A Downtown Affair with JBX

JBX of Big City Records never disappoints! He came through last week with a new set of 45s and LPs including a few songs off his beautiful Thanks For Waiting mix. While his last few sets have leaned more heavily on the soul side, this one bounces around between reggae, latin, afrobeat, soul & funk. You can catch him most days at their shop on 12th St. and be sure to stay tuned for his contribution to our new Sunday Gospel series!

Sunday Gospel [01]

We’re starting a new mix series here on Let’s Get Serious where every Sunday we’ll post a short set of gospel music. Light on editing and mixing, it’ll be a chance to showcase full songs many of them with some crossover appeal. We’ll switch it up a bit each week and plan on having guest posts from many of the DJs we’ve featured on A Downtown Affair.

For the first post, I’ve decided to include five dance tracks. Obscure modern soul leaning cuts alongside a Grammy nominated producer and a Clark sister on the Westbound subsidiary, S.O.G.

ADA – June 10th, 2011

This past week we packed up records that can be broadly filed under “summertime jams” to start off the first part of the show. The “summertime vibe” can be a fairly subjective thing, but in one way or another many of the tracks in the first part come to mind when the season starts to kick in. There are some really killer plays on here, like the Norman Week’s gospel odyssey Hold On, the outright slamming Sinnamon club classic I Need You Now and Benny Golson’s ensemble sound in I’m Always Dancing To The Music. Tonight we’ve got JBX returning to the program and if his prior appearances are any indication of what’s in store, we should expect a fantastic program ahead!
