Last Friday, Uchenna Ikonne of Comb & Razor came to the studio hot on the heels of the release of Brand New Wayo, his first on the Comb & Razor label. Uchenna is originally from Nigeria, though he has been living in Boston for the past years, so it was a great privilege to get some of his first hand accounts of the scene when these records were being created. Be sure to check out the mic breaks for a taste of what’s in store in the extensive booklet that accompanies the CD version of his compilation. We would like to thank Frank Gossner of Voodoo Funk for helping hook up the set and for bringing a few records to share as well. Stay tuned to his site as he’s got two monthlies all summer long in Williamsburg. The parties are now split in theme with one for the Disco Boogie heads and another for Afrobeat & Funk.

I linked up with Seth Kolski of KUSP’s Sweet Power after a mix swap hosted by the Waxidermy record forum. After receiving two mixes packed with top shelf obscure soul and disco, I decided to finally make good on our proposed radio swap and sent a mix of Island disco and boogie tracks off to California. Camp Debonair returns for our fourth rendition of the now-and-again jam that’s conjuring up dancefloor magic around Brooklyn. This time we’re moving to a spacious loft space on North 6th street in Williamsburg BK. More importantly, we’ll be playing humble hosts to …the legendary rare-groove DJ Peter Reyes from Newark, NJ! We’ll be covering a fair amount of ground as it’s been a handful of lunar cycles since Camp has gathered. Expect a taste of the classics and keep an open mind for the fringes of modern soul, deep disco, blissed-out boogie and other sounds fitting the Camp party ethos.

For our last show in April we were fortunate enough to have a last minute guest drop by to play a few selections. New York native Johan Churchill was back in town from San Francisco, where he produces and deejays as one half of Tres Lingerie and is a resident at Go Bang! Johan came through with a tote filled with wax picked up from an evening’s shopping in the area, and also had some digital plays to round out a boogie flavored set.
