A Downtown Affair with Chairman Mao

Last week we were fortunate to have Chairman Mao (Gusto > Swagger) on the program for a guest set. He came through with an amazing bunch of records both old and new, closed out with some serious obscurities, and brought a good dose of in-studio banter as well. Thanks for coming through! ENJOY.

DJ McBoing Boing on ADA!

Two sets by the masterful, warped musical mind of DJ McBoing Boing! Wow, what a treat! Part one is all long players of the 12″ and LP format before the move into all 45s. Tons upon tons of tender. Another taste of McBoing Boing is available at Secret Rendezvous, where a special Valentines Day mix titled “Love Me, Love Me Not” was put up in February. PA-LENTY of self-starting selections on this recording, making for quite the trip through a beautiful collection of records. THANKS ROBBIE!

A Downtown Affair – SXSW Promo Mix

We put this promotional mix together one Saturday for WNYU management to hand out while down at SXSW. I’m excited with how it turned out, and it’s quite appropriate for the onset of warm weather. We burned about 80 total. Half got cover designs by Julie Cameron and were sent to TX. The other half got an entirely different cover which we’ll be handing out around town. Hope you enjoy it.

FineLine 3.20.10 …DJ Ghostdad repeat

Hey y’all, a little last minute heads up – FineLine in effect tomorrow night!

Last month was our most successful FineLine yet, so many thanks to all you that came out and thanks for drinking! There was a posse of 90s DJs in the main room that I didn’t know, but their people were feeling the disco vibe in front, getting their drink on hard until their preferred dude came on in back – real late. The room finally cleared around 2:45 and everyone went into the back for their final 45 minutes of heavy jungle, while Ghostdad and I played the guilty pleasure joints, juggled some doubles, and he gave me a quick tutorial on the built in effects on the mixer(ixer… ixer… ixer… ixer……).

Needless to say had a fun time, so I invited him back for one mo’ gin. He’s dragging another crate of classics down 93 from Boston as part of his protracted relocation.

Right in time for this spate of nice weather, I finally got my hands on a copy of Verticle Lines – Beach Boy, an awesome cruiser of a weirdo summer jam and the first ever release on Tuff City. Here’s a preview til I drop the needle on the genuine article at the Knit! – B4$

ADA feat. Lloydski, Porkchop & James Mulry of P.R.A.T. Crew!

Lloyd cueing a Passion Production

This past week James Mulry, Porkchop and Lloydski came by to play on the program before their monthly get together at Tandem. And a super fun program it was! Before we even got down to any music, James and Porkchop were already reminiscing on skinny dipping in the East River years back. Then it moves on to some top notch records from across the disco spectrum, including a great deal of first time plays on this show. They’ve got a recording from one of their monthly nights, Particularly Random at Tandem, up at Soundcloud. Just a little taste of the expansive program of music they put together for one of our favorite nights in Brooklyn. Check ‘em out next time around! Next up this Friday is Robbie Busch a.k.a. DJ McBoing Boing! Enjoy…

P.R.A.T. Crew on A Downtown Affair this Friday!

James Mulry, Porkchop and Lloydski are stopping by the radio program this week for a special guest set before their monthly party at our favorite little spot in Bushwick, Tandem Bar. We’re excited to have James back after he played along with Rockers Galore on a show that turned out to be a fave of listeners calling in. I’ve been trying to get Porkchop on after I heard him play a tasteful Murray Head single on WNYU’s Rotation program six some-odd years ago. And Lloydski played one of my favorite Canadian disco records when they got Particulary Random At Tandem in January (Kryptonite – Baby I Don’t Know). All makes for a real swell radio experience to prime up for Love On The Run’s party at Von (see below post)!

Love Rescue

Love On The Run is back with another party at Von this Friday. For “Love Rescue” he’s invited special guests Zernell (Grimy Edits, Chicago) and Benguin (Foreal People, NYC). You can check Secret Rendezvous for more info and Zernell’s “Hot Lava” mix.

support WFMU!

Hey guys, a quick -break- in our normal programming on LGS to put in a plug for WFMU, the Jersey City-based radio station and bastion of freeform broadcasting. They are in the last 5 days of their annual fundraiser and need some support! AKA your money!

Unlike WNYU, which has the backing of a university, WFMU is completely listener supported, so you can imagine that in these tough economic times its a struggle to meet their operating costs through these fundraisers. I can’t say enough good things about the content that the (all-volunteer) DJs have been putting down for years, and I don’t have to either because WFMU has a MASSIVE archive of YEARS of their shows (which costs a pretty penny to maintain). All free online!

So listen for yourself. You’ve got DJ Small Change for the disco/soul heads, Billy Jam holding down the hip hop, a whole mess of WNYU veterans, the Director of the Raymond Scott Archives, and a former Tommy Boy exec all holding down shows! Trust me that’s just the tip of the iceberg, this station has put me up on so much music that would otherwise never make it on the radio, its unbelievable.

…. oh you know who else does shows sometimes on WFMU? ME! Thats right, after a few guest spots and a bunch of volunteering, I’m now doing fill-ins from time to time so keep an eye on my playlists!

So please, dig deep in your pockets, pledge pledge pledge, score yourself some awesome swag, and support the most bad ass independent media outlet out there!

Frank on A Downtown Affair

This Friday we were fortunate enough to have Frank of Voodoo Funk on the program for a guest set. He brought by a ton of Nigerian tracks that he collected during his travels in West Africa, some of which will be included on his “Lagos Disco Inferno” compilation, which comes out March 16th on Academy LPs. There are also two parties in NYC promoting the release. More info in our previous post.
