Feb 27th – Camp Debonair

Tonight we have our first ever Camp Debonair! Mike, Stegs and myself have been itching to play together for quite some time and we’re excited to be sequestered in the back room of Tandem for such an occasion. We’ll be packing heavy in preparation for a lengthy stay. Now. Let the fun begin. Have some coke and gin!

10pm-4am

Tandem (back room)
236 Troutman St, btwn Wilson and Knickerbocker

L train to Morgan or M to Central

Last night was staff orientation. The ropes course team & trust building exercises were followed by a counselor only dance. Stegs started off with a set of even-keeled boogie. Mike and I step in with an hour to go, but that just wasn’t enough, so we’ve got a special late set for your enjoyment.

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT w Snack n Cmish!

Tonight we’re up at Le Poisson Rouge with Snack n Cmish for our monthly party LIGHT UP THE NIGHT. We’ve been trying to get these guys to come down & play with us for a little while, so we are especially excited to see what’s in store! Stop by, we’ll be playing from 10pm onwards…

ADA – Lovers Lost

A fitting counterpoint to our Boogie Lovers set, the Lovers Lost broadcast goes out to all those who are unlucky in love. We set aside most of these songs while putting together last week’s show, and it is always remarkable to me how often it is that tracks that are geared towards night clubs take on themes of infidelity and heartache. The evening starts off slow with a few wounded ballads before the pulse steadies and we head back to the dance floor. Enjoy.

ADA’s Valentine Special – BOOGIE LOVERS

Tackleberry and I agreed that Valentine’s Day weekend surely is High Holiday for the kind of music we feature on A Downtown Affair, so this program comes with much anticipation. There are several new plays on here, but most of them were selected weeks in advance for a special Boogie Lovers program to commemorate this here special holiday. High, high heat on the dial last Friday. We hope you agree.

We’re not ones to neglect, so next week we’ll be bringing out those special plays to contrast the motifs found in the Boogie Lovers set, capturing their stories in a special Lovers Lost episode.

Tackleberry – Should We Get In Touch

Happy Valentine’s Day Y’all! Here’s a mix I put together almost a year ago for the Waxidermy mix swap. Well, actually, this is a revised version that shares a few of the more pivotal tracks. Much of the inspiration comes from my trips to Birdell’s in Bed Stuy where I’d uncover single after single of falsetto-laden R&B. I couldn’t help but imagine Fulton Street 30 years ago where songs like these would blare from car stereos. Consider this the hot spiced counterpart to Bennett4$enate’s Wine Coolers. Snuggle up and enjoy.

FineLine 2.20.10 w/ DJ Ghostdad

Coming up next weekend is the latest edition of Fineline at The Knitting Factory.

Joining me this month is DJ Ghostdad – NJ native, Boston affiliate, choice selector. He’s between cities right now but promised to load up a crate of goods to bring back this way on his next return trip. Check him out on Fully Fitted for a taste of the diverse content he’s gonna provide. Call the party line (1-800-988-7361) for info on his new First Fridays at Coco 66 (with XXXchange), or hit the archives if you can’t wait for the weekend to get loose.

See you next Saturday.

Frantz Barosy on A Downtown Affair

We had a blast this past Friday with Frantz Barosy in the studio. The board in the studio was monitoring the broadcast signal in the Bronx for the first half of his set, which explains the latency and a couple of bumps along the start of the mix (Frantz – our bad!!!); but dude was nonplussed and put down some nice outsider selections alongside some of our favorite program staples. I was especially feeling some of the last couple (Lisa Warrington’s I Like The Way You Do It!!!, and closing with some TSOV). Tackleberry and myself played a bunch of program premiers in the second half – look out for the joint by Noel Williams of Connie Case fame, Do YOU Wanna Dance?, Southern Freeze on BB, the kosmiche club burner Disco Drum, the promo-only J.T. cut I Love Music and Frantz’s slip of the beautiful Put A Little Love Into It When You Do It done by Eloise Laws.

Thanks again Frantz!

From The Archives: Johnny Paycheck

We’ve had this set languishing in the WNYU archives for quite a while, but now I’ve finally gotten around to posting it up for your enjoyment. Johnny Paycheck of Good Records came through shortly after I joined the program. He had previously guested on Rotation, which formerly occupied the 10:30pm-1am slot on Friday nights. Johnny brought in a bunch of rarities from the shop, many of which have eluded me after some years. I hope to dig up the Rotation archive and possibly a marathon set where Johnny and I hijacked the airwaves for both Passport and Plastic Tales from The Marshmallow Dimension.
