A (Very) Downtown Affair Christmas with MX Greens

As we wind down 2011, we’re real excited to kick off December with a seasonal mix to welcome the holiday cheer. A full on Christmas mix for a specialty, all vinyl program is a tall order, and we surely couldn’t put something like this together on our own. Fortunately, at the suggestion of a few friends of the program we dialed up Ridgewood, QNS DJ MX Greens. We were told he’s THE Christmas DJ. Prior to this set I wasn’t really sure what that credential meant, as I hadn’t imagined the variety of tunes, stories and concept records that were put out in the larger ‘funk / soul’ continuum. Within his record collection, there’s an ever-expanding section of HOLIDAY FUNK LPs/45″s – partially built up by solo digs, but also as a result of any funky holiday records gravitating his way as friends pass along a record here or there, knowing that it’s getting cataloged in a deep repository of Christmas’ (funky) past. Below is the full 2.5 hr set, up nice and early for heightened, high quality Christmas cheer.

MX Greens will be starting up a new biweekly party with an esteemed roster of DJs, collectively billed as the Ridgewood Soul-cial Club starting on Monday the 12th at Tandem.

After Hours

A Downtown Affair - Finale & After Hours

We finally recovered the after hours portion of our finale from a few weeks ago. Sadly, we’ve lost the recording of a surprise appearance by our good friend Peter Reyes, but I’ll figure out a way to reconcile that at a later date. In the meantime, please enjoy this higher quality download of our shows final hours!

A Downtown Affair Finale

A Downtown Affair

Here it is. Our final episode of A Downtown Affair. We’re working on recovering the few hours we played after the FM dial switched off, but I decided to get this posted up sooner rather than later. Big big thanks to all the DJs who stopped by the studio for this one: Stegs, Russell Fraze, Matt Harrison, MX Greens, Boogieman, Dave Osbourne, Slimmy Jimmy, Frantz Barosy, Peter Reyes, Tebbs, Steve, and Richie & Ashley for hanging as well! We also have to send thanks to all the listeners who have called in and emailed over the years. We’ve always been so happy to hear all the positive feedback.

Upstairs with NRich

A little parting gift from our good friend NRich. He sent over a similarly killer modern soul mix at the top of the year. We didn’t get a chance to slot this one in on FM, but I’m pleased to present it to you just before our big finale this evening. Give it a listen before tuning in at 10:30pm on 89.1FM and wnyu.org as we invite back all of our guests for one more play on the air.

For our second to last episode Sean Rowlands and DJ Spinna were kind enough to join us in the studio. Spinna’s an alumni of WBAI’s Underground Railroad and Rare Radio programs. Sharegroove

Sharegroove on A Downtown Affair

Sharegroove came back to the studio one more time last Friday. We spent no time on the mic, letting the set extend for nearly the entire two and a half hours. That gave us a chance to ponder the whereabouts of the winning acts of Budweiser’s mid-eighties battle of the bands competition, all while Duckcomb and Steve Shakewell dished out Calypso disco, island boogie, edits and house. Catch them each month in the back room of Tandem in Bushwick. Next one’s this weekend!

Foreal People

Foreal People on A Downtown Affair

So much fun having the Foreal People crew back in the studio one last time. These guys were some of the first guests to grace the airwaves with us at the tale end of 2008, so it was fitting to slot them in before the finale at the end of the month. Josh Dunn was unable to make it but he put together a great opener for us. Benguin and Love On The Run took over for the rest of the night bringing that trademark Foreal People sound. Keep up with Josh over at 100 Limousines, Ben’s latest Sycorax project on SoundCloud and Love On The Run at Secret Rendezvous.

Asaf Segal & Javybz on A Downtown Affair

Sometimes you lose track of CDRs when moving apartments and this happens to be such an occasion. I’m just getting settled after switching up my living situation and finally have a chance to post these guest sets from a couple weeks back. Javybz sent in a mix for their first appearance on the show. They host the All Styles All Smiles radio program on DeepFrequency where they feature guest mixes from around the world. They decided to class up our show with a nice mix of Brazilian records to start off the evening. Asaf followed with a bit of a Latin tinged set himself while focusing in on an uptempo classic disco sound. Definitely excited to see what makes it in the bag for the show’s finale on the 30th!

Plastic Tales with Sean Rowlands

Sean Rowlands and I inflicted our at-home listening habits on the audience of Plastic Tales from The Marshmallow Dimention this past Monday. Amid requests for The Beau Brummels and Vanilla Fudge, Sean managed to draw in quite a few satisfied callers with his take on progressive rock. He’ll be back on ADA proper on August 23rd for our penultimate episode with DJ Spinna and I’ll return to Plastic Tales (9pm-10:30pm) next week, this time with Dan Selzer.
