May 4th on ADA

Here’s a set from a couple weeks back from Mike and I. A few new plays tucked in to a set of A Downtown Affair staples. Like our last set, this mix is pretty heavy on the Leroy Burgess, but we wouldn’t have it any other way as we head into summer. Enjoy!

Seth Kolski on A Downtown Affair

We’ve been sitting in anticipation for this mix in from our friend Seth Kolski of KUSP’s Sweet Power out of Santa Cruz. Seth and his co-host Alex Burke broadcast their excellent weekly radio program on Saturday nights, 10pm -12am PST (check the link to stream past shows). Last time Seth gifted us with a real cool mix that was a summer warm up of sorts, with a lot of early disco and uptempo modern tunes. This time he delivered in an equally impressive yet totally different way; it’s a bit more bugged out, with both old and new boogie, electro and R&B, synth-heavy rhythm tracks and a strong West Coast vibe. DJ Seth Dean out of Watsonville California was on the mix piecing it all together. We’ll be returning the favor as Tackleberry and I swap back a mix to Cali to make this a roundtrip journey between our two outposts of trusted dance programming on the FM dial.

ADA w/ Prince Language

We recently welcomed Prince Language into the studio for a guest set on the show. Language was on our radar from his edits and studio reworks released on his imprint Editions Disco from a few years back, as well as the stellar catalogue of The No Compredo mixes and associated output. Big up to Charlie of UNO NYC for linking us all up, and to Josh for graciously joining us and playing a really fun and varied selection of records over his hour long mix. All this man’s affiliated internet interests are soon to be updated with the details of new releases and projects on the horizon, including the launch of The No Comprendo label… so don’t sleep!

ADA – April 13th, 2012

Tackleberry and I held court in the studio and traded off records for the full length of the program this past Friday. Heck, it was a ball; Chinese library disco breaks, Burgess crooning on Summertime to ring in the warm weather patterns, a bit of Friday the 13th Flair and some earnest boogie numbers are only a sampling of the contents of this weeks Hosts Only program. Next up we’re welcoming Prince Language of No Comprendo fame, amongst other things, which will be a treat!!!

Easy Mo Bee on A Downtown Affair

Very excited to post up last week’s guest set from Easy Mo Bee. We were linked up by our good friends Jared & Teddy from Big City Records. You most likely know him as the producer behind tracks from B.I.G.’s “Ready to Die”, but he came through the studio last Friday to share a mix of Disco and House. We also got a chance to chat about his early exposure to DJing, some digging tips and even his record cleaning technique. Mo Bee didn’t disappoint with a set running the full length of the show with selections spanning classic disco, edits and house. Enjoy!

Peter Reyes “Recovery”

And we’re back for Easter with the return of our Sunday Gospel series. For the first edition this year we’ve got a guest mix from Havana Soul’s Peter Reyes. He’s dipped into gospel territory during many of his guest sets on A Downtown Affair, so it’s a pleasure to host this focused mix from him. We may not be back every week this time, but stay tuned as we continue the series throughout the summer.

Fredfades on A Downtown Affair

Last Friday it was our pleasure to welcome Fredfades to A Downtown Affair. He flew in from Oslo for a week-long stay in New York where we got a chance to have him on the air and share a gig by way of an invite from Future Funk’s Sport Casual. Fred throws his regular Touchdown party in Oslo with Dirty Hans where they specialize in boogie, modern soul and disco. There’s actually one tomorrow night (April 6th)! For this episode we structured things a bit differently, short sets of a few distinct styles. Fred opened with a great assortment of boogie, some from his homeland which he kindly donated to Mike and I. His other set opens with an unreleased acetate from James Mason before setting off on a fantastic modern soul mix to close out the evening. If you like what you hear, be sure to check his soundcloud for more music. Last but not least, special thanks to Sport Casual for inviting us on for the inaugural night of Sunrise Social Club! Looking forward to more!

ADA w/ DJ Ionik

Here we are with last week’s show featuring our special guest Masa Sutela a.k.a. DJ Ionik. Ionik was in town for a special Secret Rendezvous, before heading down to Winter Music Conference to play the Do You Wanna Boogie? party alongside the likes of John Morales and Jellybean Benitez. Ionik hails from Finland and runs both the esteemed Kojak Giant Sounds and Traveller Record labels. On ADA he brought us a taste of each of these labels, with a stunning mix that presents the Kojak and Traveller sounds including past releases and a few exclusives. Be sure to check out the Kojak Giant Sounds soundcloud which has some great mixes and a few releases from the catalogue available for streaming (which you can then find on vinyl in your local record store!). Big thanks Masa!

McBoing Boing on A Downtown Affair

Robbie Busch aka McBoing Boing brought that Friday Pay back to A Downtown Affair last week. Little did we know that his first guest set was also the third week of March in 2010. Happy anniversary to us! As we’ve done for his previous mixes, the show is broken into two parts by format, 12s and 45s. Tons of stuff we’ve never heard of before including some great island cuts to usher in the Spring season. If you’re into the sound, be sure to check Tropical Heatwave for updates on McBoing Boing’s party with Secret Rendezvous’ Love On The Run along with guest mixes that focus on the sounds of the islands.
