James Mulry, Porkchop and Lloydski are stopping by the radio program this week for a special guest set before their monthly party at our favorite little spot in Bushwick, Tandem Bar. We’re excited to have James back after he played along with Rockers Galore on a show that turned out to be a fave of listeners calling in. I’ve been trying to get Porkchop on after I heard him play a tasteful Murray Head single on WNYU’s Rotation program six some-odd years ago. And Lloydski played one of my favorite Canadian disco records when they got Particulary Random At Tandem in January (Kryptonite – Baby I Don’t Know). All makes for a real swell radio experience to prime up for Love On The Run’s party at Von (see below post)!

Hey guys, a quick -break- in our normal programming on LGS to put in a plug for WFMU, the Jersey City-based radio station and bastion of freeform broadcasting. They are in the last 5 days of their annual fundraiser and need some support! AKA your money!

Unlike WNYU, which has the backing of a university, WFMU is completely listener supported, so you can imagine that in these tough economic times its a struggle to meet their operating costs through these fundraisers. I can’t say enough good things about the content that the (all-volunteer) DJs have been putting down for years, and I don’t have to either because WFMU has a MASSIVE archive of YEARS of their shows (which costs a pretty penny to maintain). All free online!

So listen for yourself. You’ve got DJ Small Change for the disco/soul heads, Billy Jam holding down the hip hop, a whole mess of WNYU veterans, the Director of the Raymond Scott Archives, and a former Tommy Boy exec all holding down shows! Trust me that’s just the tip of the iceberg, this station has put me up on so much music that would otherwise never make it on the radio, its unbelievable.

…. oh you know who else does shows sometimes on WFMU? ME! Thats right, after a few guest spots and a bunch of volunteering, I’m now doing fill-ins from time to time so keep an eye on my playlists!

So please, dig deep in your pockets, pledge pledge pledge, score yourself some awesome swag, and support the most bad ass independent media outlet out there!

This Friday we were fortunate enough to have Frank of Voodoo Funk on the program for a guest set. He brought by a ton of Nigerian tracks that he collected during his travels in West Africa, some of which will be included on his “Lagos Disco Inferno” compilation, which comes out March 16th on Academy LPs. I am returning to Plastic Tales from the Marshmallow Dimension tonight for a very special guest set from Joel Stones of Tropicalia In Furs. He just released a collection of psych 45s entitled “Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas,” which comes as a 2 LP limited edition package with booklet and 3D glasses. I’ll be sure to update this post with a link to the set, as Joel plans on bringing in some tracks that didn’t make it on the comp.

In preparation for the March 16th release of his compilation entitled “Lagos Disco Inferno”, we’re having Frank Gossner of the renowned Voodoo Funk blog come on the show this week for a very special guest set. Frank will take the entire two-and-a-half hours on Friday to play songs off the upcoming compilation along with some newer discoveries from his more recent trip to Africa. There are tons of mixes available on Frank’s site as well as clips from tracks off the 2LP release!

A fitting counterpoint to our Boogie Lovers set, the Lovers Lost broadcast goes out to all those who are unlucky in love. We set aside most of these songs while putting together last week’s show, and it is always remarkable to me how often it is that tracks that are geared towards night clubs take on themes of infidelity and heartache. The evening starts off slow with a few wounded ballads before the pulse steadies and we head back to the dance floor. Enjoy.

Tackleberry and I agreed that Valentine’s Day weekend surely is High Holiday for the kind of music we feature on A Downtown Affair, so this program comes with much anticipation. There are several new plays on here, but most of them were selected weeks in advance for a special Boogie Lovers program to commemorate this here special holiday. High, high heat on the dial last Friday. We hope you agree.
